Welcome to the website of the VNUHCM–US Stem Cell Institute (VNUHCM–US SCI).
Through this platform, we wish to share an overview of our history, mission, and continuous efforts in research, training, and innovation in the field of stem cell science.
Our story began in 1999, with the establishment of Lab C (Molecular Biotechnology Laboratory) at the University of Science, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM–US), led by Prof. Tran Linh Thuoc. The laboratory pioneered research in animal biotechnology and laid the groundwork for Vietnam’s early studies in stem cell science.
On December 24, 2007, recognizing the national importance of this emerging field, the VNUHCM-US established the Stem Cell Research and Application Laboratory (SCL) under the University of Science, VNUHCM, supported by a strategic investment of VND 40 billion (approximately USD 2.2 million). This laboratory became the foundation for Vietnam’s development in stem cell research and training.
Building upon that foundation, the VNUHCM–US Stem Cell Institute was formally established on June 12, 2017, by the Rector of the University of Science. We was created on the basis of the SCL’s achievements and human resources, as a financially autonomous scientific and technological unit (Category 1) with its own seal, bank account, and a Science and Technology Operation License granted by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Science and Technology.
As a former student and researcher trained within this very environment, I am deeply proud to witness the continued growth of what began as a small laboratory into a nationally recognized institute — one that remains steadfast in its values of scientific integrity, innovation, and dedication to public good.
We aspire to become a modern, internationally recognized center for stem cell research and regenerative medicine, contributing scientific excellence and tangible impact to human health and wellbeing.
Thank you for your continued interest and support.
Assoc. Prof. Pham Van Phuc, Ph.D.
Director, VNUHCM-US Stem Cell Institute
